Ambience

April 4, 2009

It’s so dang elusive and yet undeniably important–we want cool ambience on date, during a concert, sometimes while eating dinner or watching a movie. I need a certain kind of atmosphere while grading and writing. Don’t know why this is, but the elements must be perfect; otherwise, my brain goes flitting off in a million different directions.

For example, I often write at home, in my ice-cream cone jammies, hunched over my computer like Quasimodo (how’s that for an image?). The lighting has to be a soft glow and one of three custom playlists are blaring from my windows media center. Music includes anything from Tom Petty’s “Don’t Come Around Here No More,” to some ditties from the Glenn Miller Orchestra, to the ambient sounds of Enya or Enigma. Throw in a little Bush and Radiohead just to add a bit of edge and voilà, I’ve got the perfect setting to forget my world and dive into a medieval village, or imagine Denver 40 years in future rivaling New York with its terrible towers.

When I grade, it’s completely different–I need people around. Lots of ‘em, so to a coffee shop I go. There needs to be a low level buzz, with the music playing just slightly louder so I can’t hear what the next table is talking about. Oddly enough, this all helps keep my focus on on the mounds (which often turn into small mountains) of essays I have to tunnel through (and read).

So, what about you? Anyway else need a certain ambience in order to be creative or get their work done, or am I just a strange little writer gal with odd quirks?

Brain In a Jar

March 23, 2009

dscn07762I’m on Spring Break. There’s a mound of essays on my coffee table to grade. I’m waiting to hear back from my beta readers on the LAST, the very last chapter, of Devouring Winter. And I just whipped out an old short story I’ve been working on.

Lots to do, eh?

Since I actually have a little breathing space, I’m going to research and find a professional writing group  to join. I really miss the camaraderie and editing process that I had in my graduate  writing courses. So, we’ll see what happens!

I’m going to still post more pics from DFWcon too (I took a lot), but for now, I thought I’d show you all some of my office. And yes, that’s a brain in the jar, not my brain, of course, although lately it  feels like I’ve misplaced my noggin–along with my car keys( please see when the universe steals your keys for a prime example).  A student made it for her final project in my Madness and Literature class. The Malibu Barbie was a birthday gift a few years back (my friends took me to Water World). As for the meat cake up in the corner of the pic, well, that’s a story for another time….

Where Shall I Go…

February 5, 2009

Here’s a question for everyone:

homeimage2I want people to start regularly visiting my website. Why? To get excited about my novel and to tell other people about it! I think I need more graphics there and something more interactive.

I’ve got a “news” section on the website and soon will be adding links and such.  But it doesn’t feel like enough.

So, what else could I do to make the website more intriguing? Thoughts and suggestions please!

The Light at the End of the Semester

December 13, 2008

My friend Inktopia posted You Might Be An English Teacher If… and it made me laugh out loud. As a Writing and Rhetoric instructor, I could relate–especially since class ended on Thursday, and on Friday, I picked up 50+ essays to grades. Oh for joy. It’s a Friday night, and here I am at home, my coffee table completely covered with colorful folders.

Just in case you were wondering what my grading rituals are, I present you with the following:

Favorite grading music: Blink 182, Angels and Airwaves, The Killers
Favorite TV show to have on as background noise: Murder She Wrote
Favorite drink: coffee to keep me focused. Perhaps I would give more A’s if I changed to wine…
Favorite place to grade: on my leather couch or in a coffee shop
Grading garb: anything that’s comfortable and stretchy, and my down slippers (except when in coffee shop, then I change to black boots)
Grading snack food: pretzels, tootsie pops, ice cream
Favorite cuss words when I have to read a really bad paper, or suspect someone of plagiarisim: I’ll leave that up to your imagination
